GHK-Cu side effects: what can actually happen
Copper peptides are considered highly tolerable. There are still three situations where skin reacts — here they are.

GHK-Cu is an endogenous tripeptide: it occurs naturally in blood plasma and declines with age. That is exactly why topical use is so well tolerated — the skin already knows the molecule. Cosmetic serums work far below the concentration at which copper becomes systemically relevant.
The three realistic side effects
- Brief tightness or light tingling in the first days — usually a sign of a compromised barrier rather than the peptide itself.
- Mild redness on very sensitive or freshly treated skin (peel, laser, microneedling).
- Copper contact allergy — rare but real. It shows as itchy, clearly bordered redness and means stopping use.
Where it gets critical: combinations
Most reports of irritation after copper peptides come from overloaded routines. The critical partners are high-dose vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid), AHA/BHA exfoliants and retinoids in the same application — not because they destroy the peptide, but because the total active load overwhelms the barrier.
| Combination | Verdict | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| GHK-Cu + hyaluronic acid | No issue | Apply directly after |
| GHK-Cu + niacinamide | No issue | Same routine is fine |
| GHK-Cu + vitamin C (high dose) | Separate | Vitamin C AM, GHK-Cu PM |
| GHK-Cu + retinol | Separate | Alternate on different nights |
| GHK-Cu + AHA/BHA peel | Separate | Skip on exfoliation days |
Who should be careful
With a diagnosed copper allergy, Wilson's disease, or during pregnancy and breastfeeding: ask a doctor first. That is standard caution rather than evidence of harm — robust studies for these groups are missing.
Start right instead of stopping
On sensitive skin, use every other evening for the first two weeks, then daily. Two to three drops at night are enough — more product does not improve results but does raise the chance of a reaction. The LIORA GHK-Cu Korean Gold Serum is fragrance-free and dermatologically tested.

- Does GHK-Cu have side effects?
- At cosmetic concentrations side effects are rare and mild: brief tightness, light tingling or redness in the first days. A true copper contact allergy is possible but uncommon.
- Can you use GHK-Cu with vitamin C?
- Yes, but at different times. High-dose L-ascorbic acid in the morning, GHK-Cu at night. Used together in one application the combination mainly overwhelms sensitive skin.
- How long can you use GHK-Cu?
- GHK-Cu is intended for continuous daily use. There is no tolerance build-up and no need for breaks, because the peptide is endogenous.
- Who should not use GHK-Cu?
- People with a known copper allergy or Wilson's disease should avoid it. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, check with a doctor first.
