How to use a peptide serum: order matters most

The best serum does nothing in the wrong step of a routine. Here is the order, in 60 seconds.

Evening routine with serum, cream and linen cloth – how to apply a peptide serum

Peptides are water soluble and need direct contact with the stratum corneum. Applied over a cream or oil, almost nothing gets through. So in every routine the rule is: thin to thick.

The evening order

Two drops of peptide serum applied to cleansed skin in the evening
Two to three drops on slightly damp skin — before moisturiser and oil.

Total time: approx. 6 minutes

How to apply a peptide serum at night

  1. Cleanseapprox. 2 min

Remove sebum, make-up and sunscreen with a mild cleanser.

  2. Optional: tonerapprox. 1 min

Apply toner and leave the skin slightly damp — it improves uptake.

  3. Apply the peptide serumapprox. 1 min

Press 2–3 drops thinly into face and neck without rubbing.

  4. Wait 60 secondsapprox. 1 min

Let the serum absorb fully before layering anything on top.

  5. Moisturiserapprox. 1 min

Apply moisturiser on top — it seals the serum and supports the barrier.

Morning or evening?

Evening. Skin regeneration peaks at night, and during the day the serum competes with sunscreen and make-up. If you want an active in the morning, use vitamin C — and leave peptides to the night.

What peptides can be combined with

Peptide serum, moisturiser and retinol side by side for layering
Layer thin to thick: serum first, retinol alternated on separate evenings.
IngredientWith peptides?How to do it
Hyaluronic acidYes, idealRight before the serum, on damp skin.
NiacinamideYesBefore or after the peptide serum, both work.
RetinolYes, staggeredPeptides first, wait 10 minutes, then retinol — or on separate nights.
Vitamin C (high dose)Separate by timeVitamin C in the morning, peptides at night.
AHA/BHA acidsNot in the same stepAlternate acid nights and peptide nights.
SunscreenYesMornings over moisturiser — it protects the results.

Peptide serum and retinol on the same night

This works when the barrier is stable: peptide serum on damp skin first, wait ten minutes, then a pea-sized amount of retinol, moisturiser on top. If skin feels tight or looks red, alternate instead: retinol on Monday, Wednesday, Friday — peptides only on the other nights.

How to use it by skin type

  • Dry skin: apply to noticeably damp skin, then a richer moisturiser.
  • Oily or combination skin: serum neat, only a light gel cream on top.
  • Sensitive skin: every other night for the first week, then daily.
  • Mature skin 45+: treat neck and décolleté too — that is where the difference shows most.
  • Blemish-prone skin: peptides do not irritate — just keep acid nights separate.

Storage and shelf life

Serum bottle stored cool and dark, away from sunlight
Store cool and dark, and use within 6 months of opening.

Copper peptides are sensitive to light and air. Keep the bottle closed, cool and dark — not on a windowsill and not in a steamy bathroom. Use within six months of opening; a slight blue-turquoise tint is the copper, not a fault.

The five most common mistakes

  • Too much product: more than three drops does not absorb better.
  • Applying to dry, freshly exfoliated skin: let the barrier settle first.
  • High-dose vitamin C straight on top: separate by time of day.
  • Giving up after ten days: structure only changes from week 8.
  • Irregular use: peptides work through signal consistency, not dose.

The realistic timeline

Day 1–14: smoother texture, better water binding. Week 4–8: more elasticity, more even tone. From week 8: visibly flatter lines. The LIORA GHK-Cu Korean Gold Serum is built for exactly this nightly routine.

Frequently asked questions

When should you apply a peptide serum?
In the evening after cleansing, on slightly damp skin, before moisturiser and oil. Two to three drops are enough.
Peptide serum before or after moisturiser?
Always before. Peptides are water soluble and need direct skin contact; a cream underneath blocks absorption.
How many drops of peptide serum per application?
Two to three drops for the whole face. More product does not improve the outcome.
How long does a peptide serum take to work?
Texture and hydration improve in about 14 days; visibly flatter wrinkles take 8 to 12 weeks.
Can you use a peptide serum and retinol together?
Yes. Peptide serum on damp skin first, wait ten minutes, then retinol. On sensitive skin use them on separate nights.
Should a peptide serum be used morning or night?
At night. Skin regenerates most during sleep and the serum does not compete with sunscreen or make-up.
How should a copper peptide serum be stored?
Cool, dark and tightly closed; use within six months of opening. The slight turquoise tint comes from the copper.
